Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour (maida) – 3 cups
  • Dry yeast – 1 teaspoon
  • Milk or curd (optional) – 1 cup
  • Oil
  • Salt – to taste
  • Sugar – ½ teaspoon
  • Water – approximately 50 ml

Instructions

  1. Sieve the all-purpose flour.
  2. Take about 1 cup of warm water, add yeast, sugar, salt, and about a teaspoon of oil, and mix. You can add some milk or curd too.

  4. Add this mixture to the flour and prepare a very smooth, sticky dough. Add 2–3 tablespoons of oil to the dough and keep it covered for 15–20 minutes.
  5. Prepare lemon-sized balls from the dough, applying dry flour to your hands. Keep the balls covered with a cloth so they don't dry out.
  6. Take the dough balls one by one, press gently with your hands, and shape into a chapati-like form by transferring between your hands.
  7. Preheat the oven to 450°C. Place the naan on a greased baking tray and bake for 2 minutes, then flip and bake for another 30–50 seconds.
  8. Remove from the oven, apply butter while still hot, and serve with your choice of side dish.

Tips

  • Letting the dough rest covered for the full 15–20 minutes helps the naan turn out soft rather than dense.
  • Watch the naan closely near the end of baking — oven temperatures vary, and it can go from perfectly done to over-baked quickly at 450°C.
